January 2008 - Cruising the River Shannon with Marylyn Hoenemeyer
Guest speaker Marylyn Hoenemeyer will share stories of her cruise to Ireland and power boat adventure on the
River Shannon! In 2007 the California Yacht Club held there annual Commodore’s cruise in Ireland on the river
Shannon. Our own Marylyn Hoenemeyer will share her experiences as part of the CYC floatilla complete with
pictures and great stories.
February 2008 - Cruising Fiji with Jean Adam
The speaker this month Jean Adam who will making an encore appearance to share her latest adventures from
Fiji in the South Pacific. Currently, she and her husband are on a round the world tour. This evening will be full
of fun photos and adventures.
March 2008 - Recreational Boaters Association of California with Anne Sachs
Guest speaker Anne Sacks is Vice President South of Recreational Boaters Association of California, an
organization committed to the protection of all recreational boaters in California. Anne will provide great
information how RBOC protects our rights and interests regarding issues such as safety, environmental
concerns and taxes. This will be interesting and useful info. DONT MISS IT!
April 2008 - Captain Holly Scott - Provisioning Your Next Sailing Event
Capt Holly Scott enlighten us with tips on provisioning for your next cruise, race or daysail at the WSA general
meeting at SMWYC on April 8th.
Captain Holly is a fifth-generation native Californian who started sailing as an infant. She had her first boat-a
Sabot-at age ten and earned her 100-ton Master's License in 1999. She teaches sailing and skippers cruises,
and in her spare time addresses groups such as the Women's Sailing Convention on a wide variety of sailing
topics. She is a delightfully entertaining and educational speaker.
May 2008 - Kellie Fennessy and Denise George who will share their tips and secrets how to prepare for and
compete in a major out-of-town regatta. You don't want to miss this!

June 2008 - Jan Wagner of the Sea Education Association (SEA) SEA Education Association (SEA) offers
college students a study abroad that challenges them intellectually and physically by combining a sailing
adventure of a lifetime with the study of the deep ocean. Jan Wagner will tell us all about this interesting
subject. You don't want to miss this!

July 2008 - WSA Summer Party and First Annual Gutter Regatta.
Your admission fee to this event is a dish to share with others. WSA will provide burgers / dogs so bring
salads, side dishes, desserts or appetizers! The party is at SMWYC and starts at 6:30, with dinner at 7:30.
Entertainment will be the first annual WSA Summer Games Gutter Regatta! Everyone who brings a dish or
helps with prep gets a raffle ticket. We have some great prizes lined up!

August 2008 - Art Engel, "Guru" of the Racing Rules of Sailing
Getting ready to do the WOW/WAH? Doing some evening dinghy racing or weekend regattas? Get a refresher
on the RRS—Racing Rules of Sailing—from local rules guru Art Engel! Art will address our group at our
August 12 meeting at the SMWYC and talk about what we all need to know from right-of-way rules to those
tricky mark-rounding situations. Come prepared with some questions and real live examples. Prior to the
meeting, it would be a good idea to review your rule book and visit Art’s web site at www.racingrules.org.

September 2008 - Kurt Holland, Marine Weather Expert
Ever wonder about millibars and what they mean to you?? Ever look at a cloud and wonder what it
portends?? Come to our September 9 meeting prepared to learn more about weather! Our speaker will be Kurt
Holland who teaches marine weather at Orange Coast College’s School of Sailing. Kurt’s presentation is sure
to provide valuable information to cruisers and racers alike!

October 2008 - Bill MacDonald
Bill MacDonald will tell us a disturbing tale. Apparently, all the “stuff” that ends up in the ocean does not just
disappear, as much as we’d like to think it does. A lot of it hangs around to cause a myriad of problems. In
particular, Bill will talk to us about the “soup” of plastic swirling around in the Pacific—very sobering.

November 2008 - Judy Rae Karlsen and crew of Rattle and Hum
Come hear the tale of an incident on the 2008 Santa Barbara to King Harbor Race that fortunately ended well.
Judy Rae Karlsen and the crew of Rattle and Hum will tell of their frightening story of a woman overboard. You
will also hear the story from the point of view of those who were luckily close enough to come to the rescue.
