February 2009 - Captain Holly Scott
Captain Holly Scott shares stories of her adventures in the Baja HA HA race to Mexico, as well as the cruise to
La Paz that followed the race. Captain Holly is a fifth-generation native Californian who started sailing as an
infant. She had her first boat, a Sabot, at age ten and earned her 100-ton Master's License in 1999. She
teaches sailing and skippers cruises, and in her spare time addresses groups such as the Women's Sailing
Convention on a wide variety of sailing topics. She is a delightfully entertaining and educational speaker. Visit

March 2009 - Art Engel, Guru of the Racing Rules of Sailing
Art Engel will return to discuss the Racing Rules of Sailing. This year, things have changed! Need a new blue
book to replace your old red one! Make sure to be in the know about the new and improved rules before
heading out on the race course. Come prepared with some questions and real live examples. Prior to the

April 2009 - Matt Schulz, Knot Tying and More!
Matt Schulz, who will tell you everything you need to know about knot tying...and more. Matt is president of
LIfeSail, Inc. LifeSail.com and a popular lecturer, instructor and consultant in the marine industry. In 1980 he
crossed the Atlantic in a 29' sailboat! He served in the German navy from 1969 to 1977 and has been a
licensed skipper since 1974.
Matt is also owner of Schulz Surveyors, a premier marine surveying company, since 1987.

May 2009 - Leah Johnson, Invasive Species
Leigh Taylor Johnson of UC Davis will be presenting all you need to know about the invasive species
invading our area that are creating problems---a real concern! Leigh began working in 2005 to assist boaters,
harbor managers, marina operators and other boating businesses in handling the threat of invasive species
on boat bottoms and potential conflicts with antifouling water quality regulations. She is now conducting
research with economists and invasive species experts on cost and environmentally effective means for

The Annual WSA Summer Party & Gutter Regatta at SMWYC.

August 2009 - World Travels of Bob Falisey and Coco Leigh
Coco Leigh and Bob Falisey will discuss their cruising and boat chartering adventures in various locations
around the world. Learn from their experience – they will give us tips about how to choose a charter company,
decide whether to bareboat or charter a boat with a skipper, and how to select a location that will be perfect
for you – and you can start to plan YOUR next cruise. And, there will be pictures!

September 2009 - Dr. Bill Cabeen, South America Sailing Adventure
Dr. Bill Cabeen will talk about his sailing adventures in Tierra del Fuego and Cape Horn – truly off the beaten
path! Bill is an MD and Fleet Surgeon for California Yacht Club and a seasoned world traveler. He will, of
course, have pictures!

October 2009 - Nancy Marino, We ARE Marina del Rey
Nancy Marino of We ARE Marina del Rey will speak about pending redevelopment issues in and around
Marina del Rey. These are very important issues that will decide the future of this area. DO NOT miss this
meeting!

November 2009 - WSA Members Sue Service, Denise George, Kellie Fennessy; and skipper Susie Taylor!
All competed in the 2009 Rolex International Women's Keelboat Championship in Rochester NY, Oct 7-11.
They'll describe their preparation for this big regatta, and competition they faced!
