January Commodore’s Column

Happy New Year, everyone! I am so looking forward to the year ahead, working with our Board with some seasoned veterans and some newbies. It should be a great mix. As I mentioned at the Holiday Party, we are still looking for a Race Chair (or co-chairs) to join our leadership team. If you are interested in taking on that role, please contact me or any other Board member for more information. Go ahead — step out of your comfort zone. Become part of the engine that keeps our organization running and growing. The rewards are amazing! Carolyn Allport has graciously offered to step into the Education Chair position, doing double duty along with her Publicity Chair position.

A great big Thank You! to everyone who participated in the boat parade. More on that in a separate article. But know that our success was due to all the many hands who helped out.

As we begin this 38th year as an organization, I want to welcome any feedback you may have about how to keep WSA a growing, vibrant, exciting place to foster the love of sailing and promote more women sailors. At our last Board meeting, we began discussing the possibility of having a Junior Membership or Student Membership for sailors 18 – 21 years old who may only be able to join in our activities for part of the year. More to come on that as the Board hashes out the possibilities and details.

We recently held a Skippers’ Meeting where the 2018 cruise schedule was decided on. You can view it on our website here. Our first day sail of the year took place this past weekend with four boats and 22 sailors heading out for a day on the water to look for whales.

Looking ahead to next month there is the Sailing Convention for Women on February 3rd and our first cruise of the year to Long Beach. I hope to see you at our next meeting on February 13. Until then, happy sailing!
