This year’s Linda Elias Memorial Women’s One Design regatta was a great success.
Sailed under clear skies in good winds, the competition was intense and well-matched. First place went to the Southwestern Yacht Club’s team and WSA’s entry finished in fifth place, scoring two exciting “bullets” on the final day of racing. To learn more, read the November issue of “Gal’ Warnings” and visit the Regatta Network results page.
Hosted by Long Beach Yacht Club and sponsored by the Long Beach/Los Angeles Women’s Sailing Association, this annual event highlights all-female crews racing against each other in LBYC’s beautiful Catalina 37s. Visit the link above for more information about viewing locations and regatta-related activities.
This clinic for WSA Members only will focus on an important and often difficult part of any race, the downwind leg. It also happens to be the part of a race where any boat can really make up time if working effectively.
We are going to focus on how to trim the spinnaker for optimum speed, as well as how crew and captain can best communicate. The clinic will be led by Karyn Jones who has graciously offered to teach aboard her boat, Outrageous. She will be assisted by two of our WSA racers, Mary Ho and Carey Meredith. The day will start with chalk talk at South Coast Corinthian Yacht Club and then we’ll head out onto the water. July 13 11:00am – 2:00pm
All levels of racer are welcome and Karyn will try to accommodate all who wish to come out on the water. Of course there is a limit, so boat space will be given in order of those who sign up. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
As with WSA day sails, clinic participants must have a signed waiver on file. So whether you want to hone your trimming skills for the WOW, looking to learn a new position, or just want to see what this racing is all about, come join us.
WSA Members, here are two great opportunities to get out on the water and get ready for racing season:
1. Martin 242 Open House in King Harbor – Sunday, March 23, 2014 – KHYC, Redondo Beach
Join KHYC for a casual afternoon of M242 sailing in King Harbor. Besides the sailing you can enjoy free refreshments and food on the outside patio. If you are an experienced sailor you can get “qualified” to charter the local boats. We will start sailing at 1:00 PM and wrap up by 4:00 PM then the BBQ. Reservations are appreciated. We would hate to run out of food. Register at:http://www.regattanetwork.com/event/8113
2. “On-The-Water” Race Starting Clinic – Saturday, April 5, 2014 – Santa Monica Windjammers Y.C.
Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht Club will host a starting clinic free of charge for both novice and experienced MDR sailors to improve starting skills. There is no charge and sailors new to racing are encouraged. Coffee & pastries will be offered in the morning. All are welcome and encouraged regardless of club affiliation. Please register for this free event, so we know how many boats to expect: http://www.regattanetwork.com/event/8156
WSA’s participation in the 2013 Women’s One Design Regatta was featured in the Nov/Dec 2013 issue of “Wind & Compass”
Written by our very own “Sunshine Jen” and submitted by 2013’s WSA Commodore, Jennifer Zannelli, the article about WSA’s entry in the Linda Elias Memorial Women’s One Design Regatta can be found on pages 117 & 118 at: http://windandcompass.uberflip.com/i/217863
A terrific benefit of membership in WSA is the privilege of taking cruises all around the waters of Southern California.
From Catalina to the Channel Islands to San Diego and even south of the border, WSA’s cruises are fun-filled experiences designed to improve your sailing skills and introduce you to life on the water. Below are links to some of the cruises taken in 2013 (and the 2014 schedule that Melody and Jeannea are preparing looks even more exciting!).
It’s not too early to start planning to attend this fun and informative event!
It will be jam-packed with excellent clinics and workshops with a talented array of presenters — including our very own Jeannea Jordan, Fran Weber, Karyn Jones, and Judy-Rae Karlsen! We have uploaded the PDF for you to look over. It’s the 25th anniversary of this event and it’s sure to be the best.
