Our March presentation is Living Aboard in Marina del Rey, a panel of liveaboard women sailors whose experiences span the decades from the building of the marina to the present. Willie Hjorth and her late husband John were pioneers, coming to Marina del Rey in the mid-sixties to live with their children aboard their catamaran Hiolani. Willie, who recently retired from her company Mare Sails, has spoken to us in the past about her life in the Marina, including her efforts to preserve its history, which became the Marina del Rey Historical Society. Lori Klaidman grew up here on a Monk ocean cruiser with her parents and four siblings, and as a teenager became a champion Hobie Cat racer, and was the first woman skipper to compete in a world championship. She moved on to cruising catamarans and recently returned to life aboard on a Privilege 39, and now, retired from her work as a research scientist, her job—teaching sailing— is right outside her home. Christine Pernin, our Fleet Captain, is the panel’s most recent resident of Marina del Rey. She grew up in Provence, France, where she sailed the waters of the Mediterranean along the Côte d’Azur. In 2018 she moved from Beijing to Los Angeles, rediscovered her sea legs with the WSA, and now lives with her two daughters on a 42’ Lagoon catamaran.
