About this event

California Coastal Cleanup Day 2024

Be part of California’s largest volunteer event! Celebrate and share in the appreciation of California’s fabulous coast and waterways.

Every year, usually on the third Saturday in September, volunteers all over the world converge on beaches, shorelines and inland waterways to pick up trash and remove dangerous debris.  Considered the largest marine-related volunteer event in the world, Coastal Cleanup Day is a wonderful opportunity to lend a hand and make a significant difference.

Coastal Cleanup Day also provides a hands-on educational experience about the damage that trash, especially single use disposable plastics, can cause to California’s wildlife, economy, and human health. According to past cleanup data, 75 percent of the debris that volunteers removed was composed of plastic, a material that never completely biodegrades and has numerous harmful consequences in the environment. Plastic debris can kill wildlife, leach toxins into the environment, and introduce them into the food chain. Last year alone over 45,762 volunteers removed 376,308 pounds of trash and recyclables from our waterways, beaches, and lakes. Forty-one boating facilities and groups participated in the event with 1,799 volunteers collecting 17,641 pounds of trash and recyclables on land and from 203 kayaks, canoes, and dinghies.
